Biography
Francois Loupot
Name
Canonical: Francois Loupot
Also: "le grand Loupot" (Cordillot); F. Loupot (DMN 1906); "Lupot,
Frances" (Sandell)
Birth: Ardennes, France; date unknown
Death: France, date unknown
Burial: unknown
Origin: Ardennes; a cultivated man, painter and musician of talent.
Santerre's list: painter.
Family
Nephew: Jean Loupot
Ship / arrival: accompanied his nephew from Antwerp, November 11, 1855,
via New Orleans and Galveston. On the 150-mile walk from Newport he
fell ill and stopped at Palestine, Texas; reached Reunion later in 1856.
Post-colony
- Returned to France in 1859 and became a schoolteacher for
disadvantaged children in Paris (Cordillot)
- Sandell has "Lupot, Frances -- grocer / baker, owned a saloon in
Dallas," which fits Jean's Dallas career, not Francois's return to
France; Sandell's own note that the Loupots may be one man is the
likely source of the confusion. Conflict noted.

Notes
One of the few colonists whose return to France Cordillot can follow to
an occupation. He appears on the 1906 DMN roster as "F. Loupot" though
he had left Dallas nearly fifty years before -- the roster remembers
colonists, not residents.
Memorial and Biographical History of Dallas County (1892), p. 395
Jean's sketch says his uncle Francis Loupot "returned to France in
1869," not 1859 as Cordillot has it, and that the farm Jean improved
after 1857 "belonged to his uncle" -- so Francois held colony-area land
through the 1860s. Conflict on the year; the deed record can settle it.
